Personal Development

The PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum is designed to promote the social, spiritual, moral, cultural and physical development of all pupils. It prepares pupils for the responsibility and experiences of adult life and also provides sex and drug education. Careers advice is included in the curriculum as is citizenship.

PSHE takes place in most areas of the curriculum. Core and foundation studies make a significant contribution to the delivery of PSHE. To ensure that all requirements are fully met at Light Hall, pupils have 3 PSHE days during the academic year. These lessons are planned and organised by the PSHE Co-ordinator and delivered by teachers and outside guests.

Aims

The overarching aim for PSHE education is to provide pupils with:

  • Accurate and relevant knowledge

  • Opportunities to turn that knowledge into personal understanding

  • Opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities

  • The skills, language and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.

Health Education forms a large part of the curriculum in each year group and includes sex education, substance abuse, personal hygiene, stress, depression and mental health
